Star Wars Opening Crawl Vinyl Project

One of our friends showed us a picture of a basement stairwell with an opening crawl someone had done, and we decided to do our own take on it.  No I do not plan to sell these, nor do I own an Etsy store.  I made these on my Silhouette Cameo 3 with fonts I found online.  I am not a Silhouette pro by any means so we learned as we went.

We cut the vinyl in 8 different sections on 12" wide oracal 651 vinyl.  "A long time ago" was obviously it's own cut as it's blue vinyl.  The Star Wars logo was it's own, and then crawl itself we divided into 4 line sections to cut.  Our area to apply was about 7 feet tall by 3 feet wide.

Weeding took quite awhile, we cut the vinyl while painting so we could flatten it out under heavy things so it would be easier to transfer.  We let the paint sit about a week after the last coat before applying the vinyl.  I do use the roller feeder by Silhouette to make cutting longer sections of vinyl easier.

The creation details:
- The Star Wars Title I found a font called "SF Distant Galaxy" that had it already made up as an extension of the font.  I believe I did the "offset" tool in Silhouette to get it where it would be just the outline (I could weed the inside of "Star Wars").  As it comes in the font it would not be the outline.
 - The yellow crawl text we used "News Gothic" size 144.
- A long time ago we did Arial Narrow in size 75, and I discovered character spacing while doing this (after I'd dealt with trying to space out the other text) and upped that to 160% to get it how we wanted it to look.
- After applying our daughter talked us into doing the star field and that helps distract the eye from the fact our application isn't 100% straight (nor are our walls).   That was just white paint on a small brush.
- I did not distort the text at all (I saw some pre-made wall decals where it decreased text size).  We thought walking down stairs was the equivalent to the scroll.  ;)

That's it.  I do not own the rights to the text, we are just Star Wars fans.  Thought I would share our project for other families looking for something unique.

Cherry Tomato Pizza Margherita

My latest #freesample challenge from Kroger was utilizing their new Simple Truth Organic Thin and Crispy Vegan pizza crust.  I had just bought Thanksgiving salad staples when the notice of the romaine lettuce recall came out, so I was left with some cherry tomatoes I wasn't sure what to do with. Decided I was in the mood for some Margherita pizza as a Thanksgiving appetizer during the Lions game. I will also make a basic cheese pizza with the second crust for my kids to have, since they aren't a huge fan of tomatoes. Problem solved.  Fulfill my challenge and use up the tomatoes :)

I am going to modify this Epicurious recipe, I will report back on how it goes!

Ingredients
1 Simple Truth Organic Classic Thin and Crispy Pizza crust
1 Tbsp Olive Oil 1 12oz container cherry tomatoes, cleaned
1 tsp minced garlic
1/2 tsp fennel seeds, crushed
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1 cup shredded mozzarella
1/3 cup chopped Simple Truth Organic fresh basil
balsamic vinegar for drizzling when serving.

Directions
Preheat oven to 400.  Place pizza crust on a baking sheet.
Heat large skillet over high heat 2 minutes. Add oil, then tomatoes; sprinkle with salt and pepper. Sauté until tomatoes are charred and beginning to break down, about 5 minutes.
Transfer to large bowl. Mix in garlic, fennel, and crushed red pepper. Using back of fork, crush tomatoes in bowl, leaving large chunks intact. Season mixture with salt and pepper.
Toss cheese and chopped basil in medium bowl. Sprinkle cheese mixture evenly over crust, right up to border.
Spoon on tomato mixture in dollops, leaving some cheese uncovered.
Bake pizza for 12 minutes or until cheese is melted and starting to brown and bubble. Loosen pizza with slide onto board. Garnish with basil leaves and drizzle balsamic over top. Cut into squares for serving.

Here it is before going in the oven!

Turned out great!   Would do it again for appetizers.  Very crispy.

Trying out a new BBQ sauce

Resurrecting this blog to give a shout out to Kroger for adding me to their MyMagazine Sharing Network. I got a free sample of their Kentucky Bourbon BBQ sauce. They recommended Spatchcocking a whole chicken, but since we prefer white meat I decided to just give it a try on boneless skinless chicken breasts. I paired it with the oven roasted broccoli we like to make, just broccoli crowns chopped with lemon olive oil, minced garlic, salt, and pepper roasted at 425 for 25 min. Along with crispy oven fries. Just slice up 2 russets into fries with pam and season salt. Bake @ 400 for 20 min, flip, then bake another 25 min. I did not put the broccoli in until the potatoes had been flipped. My honest review of the BBQ sauce? It's ok. It is not my favorite, I found it a little on the thin side. I basted the breasts a few times with it to be sure we got the full flavor and then put it on thick on one side the last 10 minutes. I think it may be better served with ribs after a flavorful rub. But I do also make my own whiskey bbq sauce from scratch, so I might be biased on what I was expecting. #PrivateSelectionKentuckyBourbonBBQ sauce found exclusively at #KrogerCo stores! #FreeSamp #MyMagazineSharing http://mymagazinesharing.us

Wonder Woman costume

My almost 7 year old is really into Wonder Woman and wanted to be her for Halloween. I wasn't impressed by the costumes I could find online so we decided to make our own. She has been bugging me since February, so that's why I was thinking about Halloween when it is still summer. I used a variety of pins I found on Pinterest so thought I'd put all the tutorials I found helpful all in one place. My daughter is about 52 inches tall, almost 7. So depending on the age of the person you are making yours for you may need to edit my amounts to fit your requirements.

This is how the costume currently looks, all I have left is to do the golden lasso, once I figure that out I will edit the post to include that.

Supplies

To make our version of wonder woman, we needed:

- roll of gold duct tape (crown, cuffs)

- large roll of red duct tape (boots)

- sheet of white duct tape (boots)

- foam visor with corded back (crown)

- 3 toilet paper rolls (cuffs)

- gold fabric paint (shirt)

- silver puff paint (shirt)

- red paint pen (crown star)

- red tshirt, washed.

- 1.5 yards blue star fabric (skirt)

- wide elastic (skirt)

- skinny elastic (cuffs)

- gold cording (lasso)

- gold stretchy sequins (skirt belt)

Crown To start with the top, the crown I made by taking the foam visor folding it in half, and cutting to the shape I wanted the crown to be (you will wear the visor upside down, bill up). Then I wrapped it in duct tape, and drew a star. The paint pen I have is a metallic, I need to get a brighter red to draw over the star again.

Shirt The tshirt I washed/dried to ensure any shrinking would happen before we painted, also put a piece of cardboard inside the shirt to prevent any paint bleeding to the back. I downloaded the logo here and had it fit a portrait piece of paper. Then I laminated that piece of paper and carefully cut out the outline of the entire WW logo. I then used the laminated paper for a stencil, and stenciled the whole WW logo area in the gold paint. I taped down the sheet during stenciling and took it off immediately after I was done stenciling. I let the shirt dry for 2 days before continuing to the next step.

I cut the logo apart, leaving the little extra "wing" piece attached to one of the Ws. I then lined up one half into the logo where it belonged and traced with puff paint. Then outlined the whole logo in puff paint and free handed the little extra wing section that I'd left attached to the W. Then let that dry a few days undisturbed because I did it thick to hide any imperfections along the edges from stenciling.

Cuffs The cuffs I made by cutting one side (long ways) of a toilet paper roll of two rolls, I then cut another one in half (long ways) and attached one half to each of the cut rolls with some duct tape. I then angled the cuffs so the wrist area is slightly narrower than the arm side of the cuff. Wrapped the entire cuff (both sides) in the gold duct tape. Then punched a hole on each side with a thick needle and thread a small section of thin elastic (can even be a hair tie cut) in and tie. My daughter had trouble keeping the cuffs on without the elastic.

Skirt Our initial plan was to do a blue tutu with white stars glued on. But after thinking about it, my daughter decided Wonder Woman would not be the tutu type. So I headed to Pinterest to find an easy skirt to put together for her. Found this Circle Skirt. Perfect. I didn't have elastic as wide as she recommends, but my daughter wanted the sequins skirt anyways so it didn't really matter. She'd picked the blue star fabric at JoAnns, I bought 1.5 yards since she wanted it about 16 inches long. After I got the skirt built, I lengthened the straight stitch length and ran a stitch around the sequins on the elastic. Hand sewed where the sequins met up.

Boots I made complete boots, that she will wear instead of shoes on Halloween trick or treating. I roughly followed this tutorial on wrapping her legs and shoes in saran wrap then doing the duct tape and cutting off.

But after I cut off I then used the duct tape to make it wider all around. I used the entire large roll of red duct tape on her boots, she has size 1 shoes. I then cut up the white duct tape into 1 inch strips and did the stripe down the front and trim around the leg holes.

Tips

- Cut duct with scissors to keep it neat on the ends, you may need to wash your blades to get sticky gunk off after. I kept the length between 3-6" to keep them manageable, duct tape likes to stick to itself. I used a paper cutter to cut the 1 inch strips of duct tape for the boots.

- Don't over stretch the elastic for the skirt, I had to seam rip when I over stretched at first and had more elastic than skirt about halfway thru.

- Do multiple tries of the boots on as you are adding duct tape to avoid them from getting too tight.

Bread Pudding

I was cleaning out my inbox and found this bread pudding recipe that my cousin Ruth made. She omitted the coconut flakes and substituted more milk for the coconut milk, and only made half the sauce. But it was divine :) I found this blogger has it all typed up so I'll just link you here. New Orleans Style Bread Pudding
(yes I see the irony in linking a New Orleans recipe when the Detroit Lions lost to the Saints yesterday).

Omlet biscuit cups

Since 2.0 was born we've been a fan of these for breakfast. Easy to make and they reheat well. Can customize to how you like your eggs. :) I made another batch this morning. Now if I could just get to eat one... I have a baby wanting to sleep on me or take 10-20 min naps again today. recipe. posting from my iPhone, so hopefully my HTML skills made a link back there. ;)

These are pretty much the easiest peanut butter cookies ever.  My Grandmother's recipe. Makes about 3 dozen if you do 1 inch balls.

Preheat to 350

1 cup white sugar
1 cup peanut butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla

Few tsp of flour for fork.

Mix ingredients with hands until combined.  Roll into in inch balls and put on cookie sheet a few inches apart. Flatten with floured fork (make criss cross pattern). Bake 10-12 min.

quick & easy stroganoff

I made a basic beef stroganoff for dinner tonight. It wasn't as yummy as the kind Mom used to make (sadly I don't have that recipe) but it fit the bill of beef and hearty. I used the base of this recipe from all recipes, Simple Hamburger Stroganoff, and tweaked it to what I had on hand. Overall impression is "meh", needs more flavor, even more than what I added to it. I had to add more garlic pepper and was tempted to add salt too while I was eating it (though I crave salt lately so its probably fine). Won't go out of my way to make it again but for a quick hearty dinner it was good. And I have leftovers for a few more meals since my hubby and Dad are both out of town this week.

Simple Beef Stroganoff
6 servings

Ingredients
1 (16 ounce) package egg noodles
1 pound lean ground beef (I used 96/4 and it turned out well)
1 (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
2 ounces water
1/2 cup milk
1 (8 ounce) container sour cream
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed golden mushroom soup
minced onion & garlic pepper
Directions
1.Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add egg noodles and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.
2.In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no pink shows; drain.
3.Mix brown gravy, cream cheese and mushrooms with hamburger until cream cheese has given the mixture a whitish look. Add milk and mushroom soup to beef mixture, season with garlic pepper and minced onion. Add sour cream to noodles and mix. Toss hamburger mixture with pasta until combined.

Pot Roast

This is how my Mom made pot roast. It's yummy, and pretty easy. My sister got the recipe from me at Christmas and then dropped the card behind her gas stove. I e-mailed her a copy but figured yet another place to store it would save me from copying it for her a 3rd time. You need an electric fry pan like this to make this, or you can attempt it with a large dutch oven or covered dish in the oven.

Pot Roast
Serves 4-8 (depending on roast size)

Ingredients:
Round bone pot roast or larger boneless roast
Garlic pepper
Minced onion
Parsley
Basil
Chives
Pinch of salt
1 tsp kitchen bouquet
Baby carrots
Red potatoes quartered/diced
4Tbsp flour
1 cup water

Directions:
Pam electric fry pan, set to 350*
Place meat in pan, season with spices. Brown. Flip and season again. Brown meat.
Turn heat down to 200-225* (slow simmer). Add at least 3 cups of water to pan (surround meat with water) and cover it. Keep an eye on water level and let it simmer a few hours. Add kitchen bouquet to water, add baby carrots. 30 min later add potatoes. Simmer about an hour. Take out veggies and put in bowl, remove meat. Tent both with tinfoil.
Make gravy in a gravy shaker or a jar. Add flour to cup of water, garlic pepper & basil to taste. Shake so that flour & water mix. Slowly add to base in pan until it thickens (slow boil). May need to turn up heat to thicken.

Alternate oven directions: Brown meat as directed. Place in dutch oven and cook at 325* for 2-3 hours. Add carrots & potatoes (watch liquid level) during the last hour in the oven.

If we have leftovers we usually toss in some peas & corn with the gravy, cut up meat, and leftover veggies and eat it as beef stew. It freezes well.

my favorite baked mac & cheese

About 5 years ago this was on Allrecipes, I'm glad I printed it off when I did because Kraft pulled it (was a Kraft recipe). It's also not on Kraft's website, they have one with the same name but different measurements/ingredients.

Down Home Macaroni and Cheese
6 servings

Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter, divided
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp salt
2 cups milk
1/4 lb Velveeta, diced up into cubes
8oz shredded cheddar, divided
2 cups elbow macaroni, cooked & drained
2 Tbsp seasoned dry bread crumbs

Preheat to 350.

Melt 3 Tbsp butter in large saucepan on low heat. Blend in the flour & salt; cook and stir 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk; cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Add prepared Velveeta cheese and 1 1/2 cups of the shredded cheddar; stir until melted. Stir in macaroni.

Pour into lightly greased 1 1/2 qt casserole. Melt remaining 1Tbsp butter and combine with breadcrumbs. (optional, I've just sprinkled the breadcrumbs straight with the cheese). Sprinkle casserole with remaining 1/2 cup cheddar and bread crumb mixture.

Bake @ 350 for 20 minutes, or until thoroughly heated.

Curried Pot Pie

Thanksgiving is weeks away, but just thought I'd share one of my favorite things to do with leftover turkey (also works well with leftover roasted chicken). Everyone's got a favorite pot pie recipe but most are sort of bland, this one uses curry. My Mom and one of our neighbors back in the 80s came up with this one. It's been a family favorite forever.

POULTRY POT PIE

1pkg – 2 round Pie Crusts (like the pillsbury ones)
1 quart chicken stock
5 tablespoons butter
5 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon curry powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 can evaporated milk
2-3 cups cooked chicken or turkey, diced
1 to 1 1/2 cups frozen bagged veggies (i.e. corn/peas/carrots/green beans)

Preheat oven to 450 F.

Melt butter in medium sauce pan; sauté garlic and onion until limp. Add the flour and whisk together forming a roux. Add the curry powder, garlic powder, and chicken stock and whisk until thickened. Add the evaporated milk. Keep sauce warm.

In a large bowl, combine poultry meat and frozen veggies. Pour two cups of sauce over the meat/veggies and mix well. Place one pie crust into a 9” glass pie plate. Poke holes in bottom and sides of crust. Pour in pie filling. Cover with the second pie crust and crimp edges to seal. Cut slits in top of pie crust for venting while baking.

Place pie on cookie sheet in the middle of oven and bake at 450 for 25 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 and bake an additional 25 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand for 15 minutes prior to serving. Serve with additional warm sauce.

ISO Halloween appetizers

Anyone have a favorite Halloween appetizer? I'm going to a Halloween party as part of my MOM's group on Friday and am taking witches wands (chocolate covered prezel sticks with sprinkles) and thought I'd take an appetizer too. :)

in the cupboard chicken & veggie soup

Tonight I had zero motivation to make dinner. But my Dad was feeling really crappy yesterday so I needed to cook him something. I was thinking along the lines of soup, my husband wanted baked mac & cheese (as the meal, nothing else). When I'm sick I don't really want a bunch of mac & cheese. So soup it is. While standing in front of my stash of canned goods in the storage room in the basement I saw the alphabet pasta I'd bought at Meijer awhile ago. On the back of the box was a basic recipe for alphabet soup.

I tweaked it to what I had on hand.

Chicken & Veggie Alphabet Soup

8oz Meijer Alphabets (or other similar small pasta)
~1 lb cooked chicken breast, diced into bite sized pieces (Costco has frozen grilled chicken strips i like to buy & freeze for soups & casseroles)
46oz bottle reduced sodium V8
14oz can chicken broth
3-4 cups water
2 chicken bouillons
1 tsp basil leaves
1/2 tsp marjoram
1 tsp garlic pepper
1 tsp minced onion
1 tsp celery flakes

Threw everything but the pasta in the pot and brought to a boil and am now doing the simmer for 30 min bit. Then will do the cook pasta for about 10 minutes and may throw some parm cheese on, jury is still out there :)

So far it smells good :)

ISO: Thanksgiving sides in the crock pot

Calling out into the great unknown that is the interwebz: My inlaws are hosting Thanksgiving this year instead of me, because we are all going to IN to gather one more time as a family before a cousin moves to Europe with his family. My mother in law wants to do most of the cooking and I said I'd help, but she only has one oven and the bird will be taking over that most of the day. So, if anyone has any tried/true tasty crock pot recipes for the traditional thanksgiving fixings, please let me know.

My mother in law already has a green bean casserole one, it's similar to the traditional one just like 3x the amount of beans and less liquid:beans ratio. I already have a mashed potatoes one that is pretty good, just have to dig it up.

So we need:
Sweet potatoes
corn pudding (my thanksgiving favorite)
any others you may have that are worthy :)

My father in law will cook the bird and usually stuffs it, I can probably do some stove top stuffing on the stove for just regular stuffing, but if anyone has a good crock stuffing recipe please share.

An apple dessert may be good too, an aunt plans to bring pumpkin pie I believe, another a veggie tray, and another a fruit salad, and I plan to do appetizers.

Awesome London Broil marinade

My Mom always used to use some generic meat marinade mixed with wishbone Italian Dressing. I didn't remember which random packet she used so I decided to try the McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak seasoning we use on pretty much everything (burgers, steaks, pork chops). I've marinated with it before just a few hours on NY strips and it was good. This time I put the top round in with the marinade on Thursday afternoon so it marinated about 48 hours :) its smelling pretty amazing on the grill.

3lbs top round steak
1/2 cup olive oil
4 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
4 heaping tsp McCormick Montreal steak seasoning
At least 1 tsp of minced garlic, I put 2 in because we like garlic.

Poke a bunch of holes in steak (both sides) with a fork and put in a gallon sized resealable baggie. Mix marinade and pour in, press air out and then seal. Swish around to mix seasonings up. Put meat in the fridge and turn it at least twice a day to evenly marinade.

As far as the broiling or grilling goes, you'd best find a recipe but we always use two burners on the gas grill. Heat both burners to high then turn off one and put the meat over that. Switch every 20 minutes or so and don't flip the meat for at least an hour. Low heat & slow cooking along with the long marinating time makes the meat nice and tender.

Then we slice it thin and use the leftovers for french dips (just use a packet of au jus) the next day :) Or make hot steak sandwiches.

crockin' the fall ;)

Have a set of yummy things I've made in my crock pot lately :)

First up was a week ago Dad & I had this slow cooker tamale pie, it was like chili with cornbread cooked right on top. Quite yummy :)

Tonight's dinner is slow cooker chicken taco soup with whole wheat beer bread. Yum!

Both have kind of a mexican/chili flare ;)

Beef Stew & crusty bread

The beef stew recipe I make is based on my good old Betty Crocker cookbook, I have the bridal edition but it appears she also puts it on her website. Sneaky Betty. I of course change it ;) but the key is low heat and slow cooking time. Or I make a pot roast and then throw extra veggies in when reheating (shredded, with gravy) and viola, beef stew. I had some beef tips from Omaha beef and it made some very yummy stew.

Beef Stew

2 pounds beef stew meat, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 cooking onions, diced
1 bag (16 oz) baby-cut carrots
2 cans (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
32oz container beef broth
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon corn starch
2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon dried marjoram leaves
1 teaspoon herbs de provence
1 teaspoon garlic pepper
1/2 teaspoon pepper
12 medium red potatoes (1 1/2 lb), cut into bite sized pieces
1 cup frozen peas

1.Heat oven to 325°F.
2.In a large ovenproof Dutch oven, mix all ingredients except potatoes and peas. Cover and bake 2 hours, stirring once.
3.Stir in potatoes and peas. Cover and bake 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes longer or until beef and vegetables are tender.

YUM. It's so good.

Made it with this crusty italian bread baked on a pizza stone.

some fall favorites

Made Caramel Apple Pork chops Thursday night with smashed potatoes, crusty bread, and salad with Gorgonzola/apples/dried cherries/cherry republic dressing/almonds.

Friday night I made Mom's Orange Chicken

ORANGE CHICKEN

1/2 cup flour
salt, pepper & paprika (to taste)
4 chicken breasts halves
5 Tablespoons butter, divided
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
2 cups bread crumbs
1/2 cup Lemon Juice
1/2 cup honey
1 cup Orange Marmalade
2 tablespoons Soy sauce

Preheat oven to 350 F.
Melt 3 tablespoons butter in 9x13” glass baking dish.
Place flour, salt, pepper and paprika into plastic zip lock bag. Add chicken breasts one at a time; shake off excess. Dreg chicken in egg/milk mixture then press into bread crumbs. Drag through melted butter, coating both sides. Bake 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, put 2 tablespoons butter, lemon juice, honey, Orange Marmalade and Soy sauce in small saucepan. Heat to boiling; reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half.
Take out chicken, turn over, and then pour mixture over. Bake an additional 30 minutes.

With Giada's Risotto recipe, peas, and garlic crescent rolls. Then I made molten lava cakes.

Dark Molten Chocolate Cakes
(from Baker's chocolate, but I used Ghiradelli chips)
Prep Time: 15 min
Total Time: 30 min
Makes: 6 cakes or 12 servings, 1/2 cake each

1 pkg. (6 squares) BAKER'S Bittersweet Chocolate
10 Tbsp. butter
1-1/2 cups plus 1 Tbsp. powdered sugar, divided
1/2 cup flour
3 whole eggs
3 egg yolks
18 fresh raspberries

GREASE 6 (6-oz.) custard cups or souffle dishes (I have a pan with the bottoms that pop out, makes them come out easy). Place on baking sheet.
MICROWAVE chocolate and butter in large microwaveable bowl on MEDIUM (50%) 2 min. or until butter is melted. Stir with whisk until chocolate is completely melted. Add 1-1/2 cups sugar and flour; mix well. Add whole eggs and egg yolks; beat until well blended. Pour into prepared cups.
BAKE 14 to 15 min. or until cakes are firm around the edges but still soft in the centers. Let stand 1 min. Run small knife around cakes to loosen; carefully unmold onto dessert plates. Cut in half. Serve warm topped with remaining sugar. Garnish with berries.
